See how the framing is organized

01 / How we engineer

The framing is designed as a complete load path.

A conceptual deck assembly, built in the order the loads travel. Member sizes and project details belong on sealed drawings, not here.

01House + footings

Establish the fixed supports.

The house attachment and concrete footings define where loads can enter the existing structure and the ground.

02Posts + beam

Set the exterior support line.

Posts connect to standoff bases at the piers and carry the dropped beam below the joists.

03Ledger + joists

Frame between the house and beam.

The ledger, joist hangers, joists, rim framing, and blocking form the primary deck frame.

04Decking

Add the walking surface.

Deck boards run across the joists and stop at a framed stair opening rather than covering an unresolved edge.

05Guards + stair

Complete the exposed edges and access.

Guard framing, balusters, stair stringers, treads, rails, and the landing complete the visible assembly.

04 / Process

A defined process from request to delivery.

Every project follows the same four steps in the client portal.

  1. 01

    Request access

Tell us who you are and what you build. We review every request and set up the right portal account.

  2. 02

    Scope the work

Upload the site information and drawings. You get a fixed fee, deliverables, and timing before work starts.

  3. 03

    Engineer + draw

The structure is designed to your jurisdiction's adopted code and loads, then drawn for the field.

  4. 04

    Review + deliver

Drawings are checked, PE-sealed, and delivered in the portal, with messages and billing in the same place.

05 / The practice

A structural practice built for builders.

O'Hearn Engineering is a Colorado structural practice focused on what builders put up every week: decks, patio covers, post-frame buildings, and additions. Details are drawn for the crew, not just the plan reviewer.

Clear scopeFee, deliverables, and timing established before authorization.
Local criteriaDesigned to the code and loading requirements adopted by the jurisdiction.

06 / Field questions

Common questions before a project starts.

01Can I create a portal account from this website?

No. OHE reviews each access request and sets up accounts directly. Submitting a request does not create a login.

02What is included in a typical engineering package?

The proposal lists the exact deliverables. A typical package is PE-sealed structural drawings, with calculations included when required or scoped.

03How quickly can OHE turn a project around?

You get a delivery date with the fixed-fee proposal, based on the current schedule and your deadline.

04Where does OHE work?

Home base is Colorado's Front Range. OHE also holds PE licenses in ten states for builders whose work crosses state lines.

05What happens when a reviewer has comments?

Reviewer comments and revisions run through the portal under the agreed scope, so the full record stays in one place.
